ICT in Extension

Advisories by phone, message and radio — extension that reaches a farmer without either side travelling.

The fastest route to a farmer is usually the phone already in their hand.

A technician on foot reaches a few villages in a week. The same advice sent as a message reaches the district that morning. ICT-based extension uses the channels the province already has — mobile phones, local FM radio, and the group chats farmer cooperatives already run — to carry short advisories with a date on them: sow this fortnight, scout for this pest, hold the spray.

The content is the same content as the printed leaflets — cut to what fits on a screen and timed to the week it matters. Nothing goes out that has not come from the university's own recommendation, and a message that carries a dose or a date is checked against the leaflet before it is sent.

The same systems serve the university's own side of the work: the training calendar, the notice board, downloadable publications, and the record of what the call centre was asked. That record is what makes the next season's programme answerable to the last season's questions.
