Academic Council

The academic body of the university under section 11 — curriculum, examinations, admission standards and the degrees awarded.

Nothing is taught here that this body has not settled.

Section 11 of the Act constitutes the Academic Council as the academic body of the university: the Vice-Chancellor as chair, the Deans of the faculties, two members from among the Principals, the Directors of the research centres, and one of the Deans, designated by the Vice-Chancellor, as member-secretary. The two nominations from among the Principals are made by the Vice-Chancellor for four years.

It manages the degrees the university awards, determines the curriculum of what is studied, researched and taught, manages the work of examinations, fixes the qualification and basis for admission, sets the standard of teaching and research, evaluates academic programmes, arranges honorary degrees, and advises the Executive Council on academic matters. Its recommendations and decisions go to the University Assembly, which endorses them or directs otherwise.

It also sets the academic standards that the rest of the structure has to hold to: credit and grading rules, attendance and eligibility requirements, standards for supervision at postgraduate and doctoral level, and the equivalence of qualifications from other institutions.

Proposals reach it from below rather than starting with it: a subject board committee drafts, the faculty board reviews, and the Academic Council decides.
