Outreach

The university's standing presence outside its own gates — plant clinics, animal health camps, help desks and campaigns across the districts of Madhesh.

A university is not only where its buildings are.

Outreach is the part of extension that does not wait for a course to be announced. It covers plant clinics at the market towns, where a farmer brings a diseased plant and it is looked at on the spot; animal health camps in the villages; help desks at local events; and campaigns on the things that quietly cost the province a harvest — soil testing before fertiliser, scouting before spraying, replacing seed that has been saved too many times.

It runs in the other direction as well. Outreach is how a problem reaches the university before it reaches a research proposal — a disease seen in three villages in the same fortnight, a recommended variety failing on one kind of soil, a crop a district can grow but cannot sell. What the desks and camps hear is written down and passed to the Directorate of Research.

Work in the districts is done with the palika, the agriculture knowledge centre and the veterinary hospital rather than around them, so that the advice a farmer gets from the university and the advice they get from the local technician are the same advice.

Plant clinics

A farmer brings the affected plant; it is diagnosed and advised on there.

Animal health camps

Routine treatment, deworming and husbandry advice held in the villages.

Campaigns

Soil testing, safe pesticide handling and seed replacement, pushed as a season's message.

With the districts

Held with palikas, agriculture knowledge centres and veterinary hospitals.
