Department of Animal Science

Livestock production, nutrition, breeding and dairy — the half of a Madhesh farm that is not a crop.

On most holdings here, the animal is the savings account.

Livestock is not a sideline on a smallholding in Madhesh. Cattle and buffalo carry draught, milk and manure; goats and poultry convert what is otherwise waste into cash that arrives between harvests. The department teaches the production side of that: feeding and nutrition, breeding and reproduction, housing and management, dairy and poultry production, and the economics of each.

Fodder is where most of the work lands. A holding of two bighas cannot spare land for it, so the department works on crop residues, fodder trees, seasonal green fodder fitted between crops, and rations built from what a household already has rather than from what a feed mill sells.
